UNLIKELY PAIRINGS:

Eartha Kitt has been romantically linked to notorious playboy/gigolo Porfirio "Rubi' Rubirosa (pictured above).  Rubi was allegedly a political assassin, a diplomat, a chef, a formula one race car driver and a world-class polo player.  He was once married to two of the richest women in the world, his divorce settlements included:  A coffee plantation in the Dominican Republic, several polo ponies and a private plane.  Ian Fleming based James Bond on Rubirosa. Rubi was also known for "his endowment," a reported 14 inches (once described as the size and length of a wooden pepper shaker you find in restaurants).  It was rumored that his underwear had to be tailored.  Rubi charged women astronomical amounts of money for his services, and they paid without hesitation.  Whenever he checked into a hotel, numerous women would be in the lobby, hoping for a chance to sleep with him.  What's interesting, he was so fond of Eartha Kitt, he never charged, he always picked up the tab and treated her like a queen.  Rubi died after he crashed his Ferrari. Two of the Kennedy sisters attended his funeral.  To read more about him, click on the following link, Most Notorious Playboy/Gigolo

Eartha Kitt was also romantically linked to white billionaire Charles Revson (the creator of the Revlon Empire), no photo available.  A business associate said Revson was allegedly prejudiced but he seemed to adore Kitt.  He bought her expensive gifts, including a $28,000 diamond watch.  But for fear of endangering Revlon's image among Southern distributors the relationship was kept quiet and eventually terminated.

Diahann Carroll was making the film "Porgy & Bess' with Sidney Poitier who was eight years her senior, she describes the moment she fell in love with him. "The door opened.  He stepped inside.  My life changed." Both of them were married at the time, each told their spouses of their relationship and by 1963 Diahann was divorced from her husband and engaged to Poitier.  Poitier also got his divorce in 1963 and then four years later, when they could have married, they broke up after a passionate affair.

Mavis Staples has had a storied career.  She was the lead singer for "The Staple Singers" and she marched shoulder-to-shoulder with Martin Luther King, Jr. and she sang for President John F. Kennedy.  Mavis was also romantically involved with singer, Bob Dylan.  They almost married but ended the relationship, reasons unknown.
