NAT & MARIA COLE:

Nat and Maria Cole are credited with putting the “Black Hollywood Couple” on the map in the 1950’s but it was long whispered that Nat was growing weary of the marriage. According to friends, his mind was always on music. In the late 1950’s and early 60’s his career began to slip into a slight decline as popular tastes changed and he drifted into a affair with a nineteen-year old Swedish actress. When Maria learned of the affair, her worst fears had come true but she held on and would be devoted to Nat during the painful lung cancer that later took his life. Maria would be remembered as the widow of Nat King Cole. Source: “Bright Boulevards, Bold Dreams” by Donald Bogle.
