MAX JULIEN & VONETTA MCGEE:
Back in the 70’s, Max Julien (The Mack, pictured above) and actress Vonetta McGee (Belinda, Shaft In Africa, Blacula) were the black power couple. After McGee saw him in an independent flick, she was smitten, after they were introduced by mutual friends, they started dating and set up house a few months later. Julien became a huge star after he appeared in the film, “The Mack.”
According to Julien, producer Harvey Bernhard was against casting co-star Richard Pryor because of Pryor’s notorious behavior. Pryor had become scandalous for urinating on actress Shelly Winters while filming “Wild In The Streets,” in 1968. The box office success of “The Mack,” helped Pryor to get work in film again.
Not only was Julien a successful actor but he also wrote the screenplay, “Cleopatra Jones,” which starred Tamara Dobson and became a huge box office hit. When Julien and McGee broke up, McGee started dating Louis Gossett, Jr. and Julien had a brief relationship with Diahann Carroll. When McGee and Gossett broke up, she started dating actor Carl Lumbly (Alias). They would eventually marry.
Meanwhile, Julien disappeared off the radar but reappeared in a Nelly video.
Side Note: A few years ago, there was talk in the industry that a remake of "Cleopatra Jones," was underway with Whitney Houston attached to the lead role but due to Houston's personal problems, the project was abandoned. Also, the part of Jinx (played by Halle Berry) in the James Bond film was originally written for Whitney Houston, but again, due to personal problems, the role went to Berry.
