LENA HORNE, BOJANGLES & JOE LOUIS:

Bill “Bojangles” Robinson remains a legend in the black community. In the 40’s and 50’s, for Black America, Robinson had a reputation of being too eager too please whites, of remaining silent and smiling in situations when he could have spoken up. “I like white folks to like me,” he once told a reporter. As far as Lena Horne was concerned, Bojangles “was the biggest Uncle Tom in show biz,” according to her daughter Gail Buckley. He was “poisonous to Blacks and truly believed in the wisdom of little Shirley Temple.” Source: “Bright Boulevards, Bold Dreams,” by Donald Bogle.

In Related News: Lena Horne and boxer Joe Louis had a very discreet and brief relationship in the 50’s and it’s rumored that Louis also had a discreet relationship with white actress Lana Turner. Although Louis often talked about his mother, few people knew about his father. What we do know, Munroe Barrow had been committed to an asylum early on in Joe’s boxing career.
