ETTA JAMES & DINAH WASHINGTON:

One evening during a performance, Etta James was told that her idol Dinah Washington was in the audience. James decided to cover one of Washington’s songs, “Unforgettable.” In the middle of the song, she heard this big crash. Boom! She looked in the audience and saw it was Dinah. She had heard she was temperamental and that she took her ‘Queen’ title seriously. All at once, Dinah started yelling. “Girl, she screamed, pointing at my head, “don’t you ever sing the Queen’s songs!” James ran off the stage crying. Dinah came into my dressing room and said, “Don’t ever pull shit like that, not when I’m around.” She waited a few seconds before coming and putting her arms around me. “I’m sorry baby, I lost my temper but I meant what I said. You have to learn a lesson. Never sing another artist’s song if they’re in the house. Never. “Yes ma’am, I replied.’ She kissed me on the cheek and left.  Source: "Rage To Survive," by Etta James.
